This comic is a bit of a departure from what I usually do (which is autobiographical comics), but for me this blog is all about experimentation and learning, so I'm not opposed to trying something new.

This comic features a character I made up for fun. She's a combination of my daughter and me as a girl and a few other kids I've known through my years of teaching piano and working with youth in churches. Working with a new character (and a fictional one!) seems to spark a whole new set of ideas and inspiration. Give my girl a few comics and then tell me what you think. The Great Minnesota Get Together

I guess summer is officially over. That's always a little sad for me. The last big thing we do in the summer is go to the State Fair. FYI: Phil didn't wear his tux to the Fair, but he did wear some nice khakis and a button shirt. WTH? You don't dress nice to go to the Fair. Oh well.

I do not usually like to get political in my comics, but I couldn't resist making a little note about Michelle Bachmann because she is from my town and I have met her. She is as scary as she seems. And you can take that any way you want to. My little allusion to her is because of this (NSFMom). That's all I'm going to say about that.

The third installment of annoying things my brother did when we were kids. I drew this the other day when I was waiting for my hub to finish playing a gig. Later I realized I had repeated myself from an earlier comic (that you can read here). I guess my brother's stupid fart jokes and the fact that he ate paper has somehow traumatized me. Or I'm just losing my mind. Either way.

Of course, I have to say that my brother is awesome and only slightly annoying now that we're adults. The only thing I ever did that was annoying was to give him snake bites. Oh, and once I threw his hand held game device out of the car window in a fit of rage. But he deserved that.

My mom grew up in the south with two older brothers. She lived on a peanut farm and actually lived in an army tent for part of her childhood. She's a girly girl, but she's also really tough. Even though she's lived in Minnesota for over 40 years, she still has her southern accent and idioms. So when you read this comic, be sure to imagine a nice southern drawl...

Not far from my house is a little ice cream shop that's been in the neighborhood for years. Tourists who come to our town always go there because it's famous for the most delicious and BIGGEST ice cream cones ever. It's a place we go when we want to have a special treat. Today I took a couple of my kids and some of their friends to get ice cream. You can always tell an exceptional ice cream cone by the amount that is left on your face when you're all done.

Okay, folks! I have not been great about posting of the last few months, but I have good reasons! I just can't talk about it in public. But I will say, I just got back from a trip to Florida with a group of 40 high school students for a beach camp and service project. Florida in July? Strike one. 26 hour bus ride? Strike two. Luckily there was no strike three. The highlight of the trip was a boat ride out to Crab Island and a day of swimming and catching Hermit crabs. Real Hermit Crabs, not just some fancy STD! It wasn't that kind of trip! I LOVE the ocean and I've decided I want to live on a boat. That's on my bucket list.

If I can ever rescue my laptop from my kids I will post some photos and some comics. The iPad is nice but uploading stuff to it is a pain. I need my lappy!

Hope you're having a good summer and surviving the heat that seems to be everywhere! Minnesota and Florida were the exact same temperature and humidity...

Hi Everybody!

Today's comic is brought to you by the Pentel Pocket Brush pen which comes highly recommended by some of the finest cartoonists in the land (not the least of which is Xeric Award Winner, Sam Spina!). Given that my comics career is in its infancy, I'm still experimenting with style and content, so I don't mind posting my first attempt at using the brush pen. I found it difficult, but I'm determined to practice til I find a way to produce something I really like! I also need to figure out how to make my comics faster. Spending 3-5 hours per comic is too long, I think. Unless all you other cartoonists out there say you spend that much time on one comic, then, I guess, okay.

In other news, I went to the Northwest Comic Con in May and met some cool indie cartoonists that I will talk about here in the near future. It is summer, therefore there are a million things to do outside. Drawing comics is one of them, but sometimes takes a back seat to mowing the lawn, planting flowers, digging up crap in the yard. I am also the family taxi driver, so I have been spending a lot of my days driving people places. And finally, my hub, Phil is in Tanzania, Africa for two weeks. (See a video of the town where he is working and playing music.)

I find parenting stressful. Very stressful. I can't always tell when I'm stressed, unless the lower eyelid of my left eye starts to quiver. It's extremely annoying and there's nothing to be done about it except wait it out. It eventually goes away for awhile. Until the next crisis, that is.

Usually, the first snowfall is romantic and beautiful, but this year, stuff was falling down all over the place! Our neighbor lost a ton of branches and we saw a big tree that had fallen over and just missed a car! Huge clumps of heavy wet snow were crashing down, so walking was treacherous and electrical lines were snapping all over the place. And we thought tornadoes were scary!

For today, I decided to post a few sketches of some comics that I've posted here. If you are interested in the process of creating comics, maybe you'll enjoy seeing these. I always carry either a sketch book or a small clip board with drawing paper in the bag that I take with me everywhere. I always have a pencil, eraser, small ruler, and a couple of my rapidograph pens in a little zipper pocket so I'm ready to go wherever I am. I try to draw whenever I have a couple of minutes... waiting at the doctors office, picking up kids at school, at church... whatever. That way I can keep track of any ideas I might have and practice drawing every day. I just really love to draw. I love the way the pencil feels against the paper. Maybe I'm weird, but that's how it is.

Anyway, here's a few sketches from my little clipboard.

This is a sketch of Phil at a gig.

And here's the sketch I did of a comic I posted a couple of days ago. When I think of an idea, it usually appears to me pretty complete. I think in metaphors a lot... because I'm a visual person. I could tell you that I think like I'm in a fog, but you get a better idea when I draw the fog and then the thoughts are little rockets that I can't catch.

Brain Fog Disorder

A couple of months ago, I went through a psychological evaluation to find out if I had A.D.D. It was pretty grueling as tests go, I was there for almost 5 hours and was interviewed as well as taking a battery of tests. One thing I found out is that I'm a monster processor... my processing speed is manic, but sadly, my working memory falls far below that. So, I often feel like my brain is speeding, but I can't grasp and hang on to whatever thought is flashing through. It's really frustrating. Sometimes I find myself wandering in some other world, unable to focus in on any one thing. Time becomes irrelevant during these little forays into my imagination. I've spent valuable minutes/hours day dreaming!

Then there's this thing called "executive functioning". That's the ability to organize your life, keep track of your things, categorize, make decisions, be prompt, be able to follow through, manage your time wisely... an ability that's massively impaired when you have A.D.D.

I've spent my whole life trying to function, going to school, working, managing my home and family, but struggling in a kind of fog. Finally, I have an answer as to why it takes me so long and why it is so much of an effort to do things that seem to be easy for most people. I have a brain that doesn't fire very efficiently. I'm so relieved to find that there is something that can help me. It doesn't solve all my problems, but it clears out the fog and enables me to be productive. I'm not the type of person to say that all you need is a magic pill, but if there is something that helps, then by all means, take it. I can testify that my life has improved many times over now that I've found something that helps me think.

Hey! I just wanted to check in with you all since I haven't posted in a week! I've been a little under the weather AND super busy with stuff at home. You might not know this, but I Homeschool my daughter, I'm starting to teach a few students this year (piano lessons!) and I have four kids that all need stuff so my life feels a little out of control at times. On the positive side, the weather has been gorgeous and that makes for a good mood. I'm still drawing and working on the latest Sunday comic that I missed last week... It's coming soon, I promise!

I've been checking out Andrew at Shmerious Blog (which you should too... lots of cool art, comics, illustrations and shtuff) and he posted a very cool book that he made. So, I thought I would follow suit and post a similar book that I made earlier this summer. The cover is book board decoupaged with vintage repro paper, blank pages all sewn together with hemp. Fun!

The Early Years: an Idea I Had

Yes, folks, that's a mullet and I have a perm. That dates us pretty much doesn't it??? But my hub is a musician and a lot of them had mullets in those days. This is my new Sunday series, "The Early Years". There were some interesting things that happened in those early days and tho I can't always remember the exact conversation, I remember very well the emotion and sentiment, so I'm doing my best to make these comics true to the original event. This is the story of our first child, Riley, and with his permission, I'm going to tell his story to the best of my ability.

Oh, and just for fun, I made an Influence Map showing which comics inspired me to make my own comics! There were many more, but these are probably the ones that I loved the best. Of course, "Maus" was the most influential and almost life changing. If you haven't read it yet, you should. It's a classic. I didn't add Garfield, because I was embarrassed to admit I read Garfield. I also had a pretty decent collection of MAD Magazines too. I was the only girl I knew that read those. That makes me pretty geeky I'm thinking.

2. Maus by Art Speigelman. A classic tale of survival in World War II
3. Lynda Barry. I LOVE HER.

Now that I've posted this comic, I see how gruesome Homer Simpson's head looks sitting up there. It's supposed to be Homer drooling over some doughnut or slab of pork chop, but instead it looks like someone chopped off his head and he's bleeding from the mouth. And that makes no sense at all. I apologize for the weirdness of that image. Not to mention that Phil looks like he's wearing lipstick in the last panel, which he almost never does. So, dang.

My Cartooning Injury

Yes indeed. You must be careful when drawing comics because if you aren't, your Rapidograph pen might somehow slip forcefully out of your hand, fly like Superman and impale you in the eyelid. And if that should happen, you will be left with a black ink spot on your eyelid that is unremoveable. My own little tattoo. And it's not a very pretty tattoo.

Okay, it doesn't look all that big in this picture, but it is about an 8th of an inch long and black.

When I was 5 years old, my dad told me to get him a pen. Instead I got him a pencil. We got into a little argument. He said Pen! I said Pencil! and then I jabbed the pencil into my knee for emphasis. That mark is still there to this day.

Now, I don't mind too much having a pencil lead mark in my knee, but I'm not very happy about having a black mark on my face. Any ideas on how to get rid of it? Do you think I'll have to visit a tatto place and have it removed that way? Or should I just live with it? I was thinking of getting a tattoo for my birthday, but this is not what I had in mind.

Here's a couple of ATC's I worked on today to go in my mini comics package, which is going out tomorrow... my apologies to all who are receiving one! I've been working hard to get everything ready but life always gets in the way. Anywho, they're going out tomorrow, finally.

I'm loving the steampunk stuff (the first two ATC's), they're so vintage, whimsical, mechanical, old timey, rusty, just downright cool. I don't know much about the movement (if there is one), it's just way fun to draw.

P.S. all of these were colored with the Copic markers... the first guitar one really got a nice water color look to it. On the backgrounds of the first two I colored first with a white colored pencil and then over the top with the Copic marker... it has a nice "distressed" look to it.

I'm working on the next comic right now, so it'll be up soon!

For the Mindzai Uninitiated: Lamp is my nemesis. He represents the little voice inside my head that tries to sabotage everything I do. Wow!!!

I am amazed at the talented web comic community I have been privileged to become a part of in the last 7 months or so! So many great artists and creative minds that share their work and lives with each other and the world. It's unusually wonderful that this community even exists. I hope you all know how much you have enriched my life in just this short time.

I want to pay tribute to some of my web comic friends who have been kind enough to share their original art and zines with me of late, so the rest of this post will be dedicated to those awesome artists who have sent me goodies in the mail!

Allen Duffy of Allen Duffy Comics and Tickled Pink Comics

Included in my Allen Duffy Treasures: awesome trading card running men, hairy (and a couple of naked ones), just like I like them! An original Tickled Pink comic!!! Business cards, and some amazing decorations on the envelopes and such!

I was so inspired, I sketched out my own version of Allen's Classic Running Man:

Kurt of Other People Exist who liked the LOST Artist Trading Cards I had made and made me some awesome LOST trading cards of his own!

Very cool LOST inanimate objects, Kate's handcuffs, Niki and Paulo's diamond bag, Eko's Jesus stick, and Sawyer's letter. Loved these!!!!

ButterSword

A game zine/game board with pieces (I'm not a gamer, but I thought it looked sooo cool I wanted one of my own).

Two Zines and some original art!!! These two have a fun blog where they post comics (about getting attacked by geese and a rad rock band with a crazy singer in go-go boots) and also blog notes about their escapades at home gardening, building stuff and fixing bad cuts with super glue.

And last but soooooo not least

Mr. Sam Spina of Spinadoodles comics

Decorated envelope, stickers, business cards, and the Spinadoodles Digest... the first year of comics! Wow! Sam outdid himself on this comic. It's so well put together, so funny, full of surprises! (That's my son, Nate and my daughter, Rosie in the pics below)

Just for fun, here's a comic I did when I was first starting to draw comics... maybe a year ago or so. My brother still likes to do some of these things. I won't say which ones.

I'm loving having a dog in the house! It somehow forces you to lay back and take some time to, well, you know, smell the flowers. (or pee on them in K.C.'s case) Really relaxing!

Also, I spent a ton of time making and illustrating a book for a friend of mine. I scanned the entire book, but didn't have time to save them. You know what's coming right? So when I came back to save them, photoshop crashed and I lost everything...I know... wah, get over it. I think my friend can scan it for me (she lives in Amsterdam!) so maybe all will not be lost. In the meantime I have some photos and will try to post soon.

To top it off something ate my new hydrangea bush in my yard.

I guess deep down I must be a cat person. But I really do love dogs too and K.C. is an awesome dog! I hope I didn't do permanent damage to her psyche by accidentally calling her "kitty".

I got some cool, cool stuff in the mail from Sam Spina, and M.C. and Jen over at Buttersword.com. I'm planning a blog post dedicated to them in the near future, but I"m also working on a baby shower gift (a book of original Robin Art) for someone that has to be done by Friday! Eek, I'm not close to being done... sound familiar??? In the meantime, check out their awesome comics and show them some love!

Hey! How's everybody doing today? Where I am sitting, the sun is streaming through my deck doors (no deck, just the doors, long story...) into the kitchen looking downright cheery. Hope your day is as bright or will be soon!

Okay, so I made these cute little ATC's and tho I said I would try not to do any more LOST related stuff, I guess it's just not to be. You'll have to take me LOST warts and all. Anyway, if someone would like to do an ATC trade I would be up for that! Some of these aren't available for trade, but I'm happy to do more if you have a request (it doesn't have to be LOST related). Both times this happened I thought bugs were crawling on me and I probably don't need to tell you that there are some people who freak out at the notion a bug is crawling on them. I don't know why my family likes to torture me so much. Because they love me? Hmmmmm.....
